- Curled up shingles - Curled up shingles will let you know that your shingles are very old. When the shingles are curled they can let water in and cause further damage from the elements.
- Loose or missing Shingles - This can be a source of water leakage and internal home damage.
- Spots of water damage on the ceiling - This may be an indicator that there is water coming in through the roof. If this is the case you will need to act quickly to minimize any damage.
- Color - Old shingles may have black, brown, or green coloration and streaking on them. This could be mold or moss growing on your roof. The discolored shingles will start to look bad and ultimately lead to replacing the roof.
- Age - Shingles last anywhere from 15-25 years depending upon the harshness of the climate and the quality of the materials used. Because Vermont winters can be harsh, roofs typically have shorter lives than in other parts of the country where they do not endure as much climate change, snow, and ice.
- Worn Granules - Granules protect your shingles from sunlight and water. Examine the shingles to see if they still have a good amount of granules or if they are getting smooth. Smooth shingles is a sign that your roof may be aging and it is time to give us a call. In addition to having smooth shingles, you may see black spots appearing on the shingles where the granules have worn off.
The best way to know for sure that you need a new roof is to get a pair of binoculars and have a look at different parts of the roof. It is not necessary to climb on top of the roof in most cases.
